The R&A, which takes its name from the Royal and Ancient Golf Club in St Andrews is organiser of the premier event in the golfing calender, The Open Championship. The R&A is also responsible for the administration and development of golf's rules worldwide.
Over 125 national and international, amateur and professional organisations, from over 110 countries are affiliated to the R&A, meaning that it operates on behalf of an estimated 28 million golfers in Europe, Africa, Asia Pacific and The Americas (outside the USA and Mexico). The United States Golf Association (USGA) is the game's governing body in the United States and Mexico.
The R&A took over the running of the Amateur and Open Championships in 1920 and by developing The Open Championship as one of the world's great sporting events and an outstanding commercial success, The R&A is able to invest an annual surplus through The R&A Foundation into grass roots development projects around the world.
