The name Roulette is French meaning "Small Wheel". There is however another theory that the game was brought over to Europe by Dominican Monks who were trading with the Chinese at the time along the Asian shores.
In 1657 a French Scientist, Blaise Pascal, introduced a very primitive version of Roulette and said it was a by-product of his perpetual motion devices. Pascal is also accredited with the probability theory. Then in 1800 the first American Roulette table opened in New Orleans, showing the instant demand that the game is still famous for.
In 1842 two Frenchmen, Francois and Louis Blanc invented the father of the modern Roulette wheel, the single zero Roulette game. This game became an immediate success, but due to bans on gambling in most European cities it remained a fixture of the world famous resort, Monte Carlo.
