The Open Championship is the flagship event on the golfing calender and an unmissable spectacle in the action packed programme of British summer sporting events. Here is your complete guide to the 2006 championship hosted by The Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Hoylake.
The 135th Open Championship will be hosted by The Royal Liverpool Golf Club from Thursday 20th to Sunday the 23rd of July 2006.
This will be the 11th time that the club has hosted arguably the greatest golf tournament in the world. Read on for all the information you will need when attending the Championship, including ticket prices, travel arrangements, accommodation and playing schedules.
Buying your Tickets
You can purchase your tickets on arrival at the course, and all the paygates will remain open throughout the day. Expect large queues on the Championship days and please note, credit and debit cards can only be used at selected paygates.![]()
Juveniles (under the age of 16) will be entitled to free admission if they hold a Juvenile admission badge, having applied in writing in advance to The R&A Ticket Office, or if they are accompanied on the day by a responsible adult. If a juvenile does not hold a valid Juvenile ticket or is unaccompanied by a responsible adult they will not be entitled to free admission. The juvenile may purchase a Youth ticket.

Getting There
Planes...
Liverpool's John Lennon Airport is Hoylake's nearest International Airport, offering excellent travel links from a wide range of European countries. Trains...
During The Championship Days (excluding Sunday) trains will start running at 5.28am from Moorfields, Liverpool and at every half hour up until 7am. Then from 7am they run at ten minute intervals until 11am. They will then run at 15 minute intervals until 3pm when a return to ten minute intervals continues until 7pm. Trains are every 15 minutes from that time until 10pm. Trains will run half hourly from 10pm until the last train at 11:04pm.
On the Sunday, trains will run as above however starting at 7am. Trains will also have an increased number of carriages to meet demand from Monday, June 17.

There are good motorway links to the Wirral and motorists travelling to The Open are advised to use the designated routes which will be clearly signed by the AA.![]()
From the North...
Exit the M6 at junction 26 and join the M58 heading to Liverpool. At the end of the M58 follow signs for the Wallasey Kingsway Tunnel. Take the Wallasey Kingsway Tunnel and join the M53 (signed North Wales and Chester)
From the East...
From Manchester, exit the M62 at junction 15 and join the M6 southbound. Thereafter, exit the M6 at junction 20a and join the M56 signed for Chester. Leave the M56 at junction 15 and join the M53 heading towards Birkenhead.![]()
From the South...
Exit the M6 at junction 20a and join the M56 signed for Chester. Leave the M56 at junction 15 and join the M53 heading towards Birkenhead.![]()
From North Wales...
From the A55 join the M53 at junction 12 heading in the Ellesmere Port direction.![]()
Park and Ride:
Park and Ride facilities will be clearly signed and will be operating a short distance from the course. Anybody arriving by car without a reserved car park label should use the Park and Ride facilities, as parking provision is severely limited adjacent to the course.
The R&A has organised two official public park and ride sites:
- Heron Road car park
Traffic will be directed to this park and ride site via the M53 Junction 2, Moreton Spur, Upton Bypass, Saughall Massie Road, and Saughall Massie Bypass.
A bus service will then shuttle spectators to Royal Liverpool Golf Course heading via Birkenhead Road and Market Street to a drop off point in Stanley Road.
- Pump Lane car park
Traffic will be directed to this park and ride site via M53 Junction 3, Woodchurch Road, Arrowe Park Road, Upton Bypass and Greasby Road.
The bus service will operate along Saughall Massie Road, Black Horse Hill and Grange Road, stopping at a drop off point on Meols Drive. These buses will return along Frankby Road.
Coaches:
Coach parking for up to 120 coaches will be available on Meols Parade on a first come first served basis. There will be no charge for this facility. Coaches wishing to simply drop off and pick up passengers will be directed to Orrysdale Road. Coach drivers should follow the AA signs.
