Known as the “king of casino games,” Roulette offers a leisurely gaming experience to the player in search of excitement and a touch of elegance.

Although many theories exist on the origins of Roulette, it remains unclear exactly where and when the game was played first. What is known is that Roulette (a French word meaning “little wheel”) has been around since at least 1796. It is believed that it originated from combining the the English wheel games Roly-Poly, Ace of Hearts and E.O. with the Italian games of Hoca and Biribi.

Roulette

It was only in the early 1800’s, when Frenchmen François and Louis Blanc opened a casino in the Principality of Monte Carlo, that the game caught the attention of the financial elite and socialites. The game’s popularity grew fast and it quickly became known across the globe.

Online Roulette only made its debut on the internet in the mid 1990’s and it remains one of the most popular forms of online casino entertainment offering more betting options than any other online casino game.

Online Roulette

Online Roulette is a much faster game than its land based counterpart, but when compared to other online casino games it offers a relaxing way of winning big due to the amount of time it takes for players to place their bets and for the spinning of the wheel.

This game of chance is all about “predicting” on which number the ball will land after the wheel has ceased spinning. Players can however increase their chances of winning by following a few simple strategies like for example betting on a group of numbers.

While beginners might feel a bit overwhelmed by the rules of Roulette, they are actually simple to learn.

The dealer will start each round with a request to players to place their bets. Players must now look at “inside” and “outside” bets and decide on a variety of bets within these two sections. The number combinations within the inner numbered section of the Roulette table make up the “inside” bets, while the “outside” bets lie outside the tables numbered section.

Here’s a look at the different types of “inside” bets.

Straight bet: The chips are placed in the middle of a number square.

Split bet: The player bets on 2 adjoining numbers and the chips are placed on the line between numbers.

Street bet: The player bets on 3 numbers in one horizontal line so chips are placed on the edge of a line of numbers at the end of the line.

Corner / Square bet: The chips are placed at the horizontal and vertical intersection of the lines between the numbers. This is a bet on 4 numbers in a square layout.

Sixline bet: This bet is on 2 adjoining streets (see above) so the chips are placed at the corresponding intersection.

Trio bet: The chips are placed on the intersection point of zero, one and two or zero, two and three.

Roulette has different types of “outside” bets as well.

Even money bet: This is a bet on 18 numbers. In this instance the chips are placed in the box that represents an “attribute” (black, red, low, high, even, odd).

Group bet: This is a bet on the 1st, 2nd or 3rd group of 12 numbers.

Column bet: This is a bet on all 12 numbers on any of the vertical lines. The chips are placed below the final number in the column.

Red or Black: This is a very common Roulette bet which offers the player a 50/50 chance of winning. The player bets on whether the ball will fall on a red or black number and the bet gets placed on the area marked either red or black.

Odd or Even: (Similar to Red and Black except with odd or even numbers). It must be noted that 0 does not count in this bet. This bet gets placed in the squares marked odd or even.

Low or High: This bet gets placed in the boxes with either of the number ranges marked on them. The bet is made on whether the next number to come up is in the range of 2 – 18 or 19 – 36.

Columns: This bet pays out at 2 to 1.It is made on whether a number within a set column on the table comes up. This bet gets placed within a box at the end of the column with the words 2 to 1 marked on them.

Dozens: (Similar to the Columns bet). This bet also pays out 2 to 1. The bet is made on whether the number to come up is in the first dozen (1 -12), the second dozen (13 – 24) or the third dozen (25 – 36).

All players need a strategy to play the best possible game of winning Roulette and all strategies are based on odds and the chance of the ball landing in the right slot. Betting on a group of numbers will therefore significantly increase a players’ chance of winning in online Roulette.

Roulette Strategies

The three most common and best Roulette strategies are:

The 12 number
This strategy is one of the most popular. A player will place a bet on either side of the first, middle or last third of the numbers on the table. In doing so the player stands a chance to win the equivalent of the bet back plus double.

Combined
The player will bet on a colour as well as a third, also known as “using insurance.” The player has the chance to win both or to split the bets.

Long shot
The player will place his or her bet on just 1 or 2 squares. This bet needs to be kept low as it promises the chance of winning big, but losing big is also a possibility!

For the chance to play better Roulette and increase your changes of winning, herewith a few tips.

Always keep in mind that you will increase the odds of winning when bidding on more numbers, but at the same time the odds of winning increases the less you win.

You can place multiple bets on the same spin, but once you’ve clicked on the “Spin Wheel” button (in online Roulette) you will only get the chance to place another bet in the next round.

Avoid the zero or double zero where possible.

Beginners should try to play “outside” bets first as they have the highest odds of winning, even though the payouts are lower.
